Singapore Turf Club (STC) celebrates 180 years of racing, sports and recreation. The Club’s rich heritage dates back to 1842 when Scottish merchant William Mcleod Read and a group of horse racing enthusiasts introduced the ‘Sport of Kings’ to Singapore.
First founded as the Singapore Sporting Club at Farrer Park, the Club inaugurated the first race, the Singapore Cup on 23 and 25 February 1843. The race commemorated the 24th anniversary of Sir Stamford Raffles’ founding of Singapore.
STC has played an instrumental role in shaping the sport of horse racing in Singapore. From paving the way for the first female jockeys Irene Pateman and Paula Wagg from Australia to ride in Singapore in 1881 to raising the standards to realise the dream of competing internationally in Hong Kong in 1989 and Dubai in 2011.
